Cone Health Seeks To Stifle Hospital Competition/Choice in Greensboro

The Triad Business Journal published yesterday the details of an appeal Cone Health filed in state court opposing the Certificate of Need granted by state to Atrium/ Wake Forest Baptist for its proposed new hospital on Horse Pen Creek Rd.

Cone Health uses a variety of creative arguments. But the finding the state must make is whether the additional hospital beds are needed. Given the fact that Atrium is merely transferring hospital beds from High Point to Greensboro, and there is no net increase in beds with the proposal, Cone’s arguments seem irrelevant– at least to me.

But Cone is using the appeals process to delay; and is hoping the state’s courts will support its continued monopoly status. Stay tuned.

  1. Great clip, Fred. And truth be told, all the hospital systems are “baddies”. The objective would be that competition can help protect the public and make these hospital systems at least somewhat better.
