What happened at the Lawndale Drive Food Lion was profoundly awful.
Every time a policeman like Michael Horan responds to a call such as this, there can be enormous risk. We continue to appreciate insufficiently the danger they face on our behalf. In the vast majority of cases, we never hear about it because the situation is managed well or otherwise resolves itself.
This is the second year in a row that the department had an officer shot and killed during Christmas week. Last year, it was Dale Nix.
Once again, we must point out the fact that Greensboro’s city council– including our esteemed Mayor, Nancy Vaughan– have politicized the Police Department in a detestable fashion. They sided with criminals and undermined the police, it seems, whenever situations arose. That led to an increase in crime conditions that place officers at greater risk.
But they also perpetuated the anti-police mindset that exists among significant portions of the black community and even among many black clergy. When a deranged black man like Tarell McMillian shoots and kills a cop, it is often the result of years– if not decades– of social conditioning that the police are the enemy.
The Greensboro City Council’s members ought to repent, and reform their wicked ways.
Sadly he City Council isn’t going to change.
I agree, Fred. The bodies may change, but the same corrupt influences put other people in place similar to those they replace.
