Two Triad Newspapers Closing/ On The Ropes

The Rhino Times reports that the Northwest Observer is shutting down; and that Triad City Beat is at grave risk.

I was unaware that this was an imminent issue for these publications. Triad City Beat is a far-left paper whose editor and his family were involved in a serious motor vehicle accident– with very consequential injuries– earlier this year.

The Greensboro News and Record, of course, is but a shadow of its former presence in the community.

The loss of these publications would deal a serious blow to local news reporting in the Triad. We would become even more dependent on local TV news than we now are.

I was not a regular reader of the Northwest Observer although it had a longstanding presence serving some of the more rural parts of Guilford County. Triad City Beat sometimes produced reporting of value that other news sources did not cover.

Publishing local news is a difficult business throughout much of the country.
