The USAID story this week revealed horrendous misuse of taxpayers’ monies– overseas and at home. This was a program that was initially intended to purchase goodwill with foreign nations by extending aid.
I won’t try to catalogue all the abuses but federal money was showered on many different types of organizations. One particularly egregious area of funding was to pay off media organizations– the New York Times, Politico, AP, Reuters, BBC– in exchange for parroting various left wing/ globalist narratives.
But it was particularly fascinating to see that various “evangelical” organizations had taken federal money, directly or indirectly. Examples include:
- Christianity Today, led by the former director of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC), Russell Moore;
- World Relief— a part of the National Association of Evangelicals– that was heavily involved with settling illegal immigrants in the United states;
- Redeeming Babel— instituted by Moore, David French and Curtis Chang of Duke University– to create a lefty Sunday School curriculum called After Party; and
- Send Relief— a Southern Baptist initiative tied to the North American Mission Board that deals with refugees.
- Revoice, a “Christian” homosexual advocacy group. The Dissenter has the details.
These organizations were receiving government money because they were serving left-leaning agendas. This is what they were paid to do.
Many Christians justifiably feel that our ministries ought not be funded by government.
