Our Country is Broken, and the Republicans are Pathetic

Pastor Doug Wilson had a video this week in which he commented on the mid-term elections. He said that the results are an indication that our country is broken. He is absolutely right, regardless of however you might place the blame for this state of affairs.

I blame the Republicans in large part. A combination of marginal candidates; the insufficient commitment of Mitch McConnell to certain races; and their inattention to election integrity in certain states was a recipe for disaster.

They are conflicted, ineffectual, and yes… pathetic.

The picture here in North Carolina is a bit better statewide, but that is negated by an unwillingness on the part of Raleigh Republicans to pursue conservative policy options. It is unclear at this point whether they will have a veto-proof supermajority in both houses of the General Assembly. The reporting on this matter has been inconsistent over the last several days.

The Daily Haymaker relates how the state’s GOP establishment sabotaged a key state House race in Cabarrus County. But even if they had a supermajority in both houses, the large number of moderates makes it unlikely anything worthwhile will pass.

One key GOP legislative leader in Raleigh already is floating the premise that passing legislation to make abortion legal through the first three months of pregnancy is a good path forward. He ignores the reality that the vast majority of abortions take place during the first three months. Meanwhile, the North Carolina Values coalition reports that abortions in our state have skyrocketed 37% because surrounding states have tougher laws restricting the practice.

The metro areas in North Carolina now are fairly indistinguishable politically from the cities that are furthest left in places like New York and California.

It is a very sad future for our kids and grandkids when the Republicans refuse to fight for them. On the socialist side, we witness large numbers of voters electing someone like Fetterman, in spite of the economic conditions, thereby demonstrating how imperiled the Republic is today. Many of these folks are clueless– but they are also cavalier regarding what they would impose on our country. And they represent AT LEAST a solid 40-45% of the electorate.

We need to be resigned to the fact that the country– and our state– will continue to deteriorate. Free speech, religious liberty and economic freedom are all in free fall. A new totalitarianism is being erected.

We can no longer have any kind of expectation that political measures will reverse this decline.

  1. Yes.. All those things but in the words of Alexander Pope:

    “Hope springs eternal in the human breast;
    Man never Is, but always To be blest.
    The soul, uneasy, and confin’d from home,
    Rests and expatiates in a life to come.”
