One of his opponents, John Thune, issued a not-so-veiled threat against Trump within the last day or so not to intervene in the race for Senate Majority Leader.
Scott would be a much better choice:

I love Mike Johnson, and he has the mildness of personality that ought to sit well with everyone.
Mike Lee apparently has suggested that JD Vance (as President of the Senate) be majority leader. That would be outstanding.

That WOULD be great, Healey. It would take him physically out of the White House, but it might be worth it.
The establishment Republicans in the Senate caucus– and they have a strong majority of that caucus, as you know– will not want Johnson or Vance or Scott, as you know. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I hope Trump makes his case against Cornyn and Thune, but I had read earlier this week that he might be cozying up to Cornyn.
This really seems underhanded for them to do it in the absence of the newly elected Senators. I’m going to call Budd and Tillis Monday to argue for delay and Rick Scott. This really isn’t a small issue. McConnell gave huge money to a RINO running with zero chance in Maryland and none to really deserving candidates in close races like Lake in Arizona and the candidate in Michigan. He is such a Uniparty saboteur that no one similar to him should be Senate leader.
I think I had heard yesterday, Healey, that the new Senators will be involved, but of course they will have little power to stop this. You are precisely right on McConnell’s pending on the Senate campaigns.
Giving this to Thune or Cornyn is potentially of HUGE consequences. It would sink Trump’s legislative agenda from the outset. McConnell’s leadership has been disastrous, and anyone similar to him would be enormously destructive, as you suggest.
They also ought not have a secret vote because that would enable them to conceal what they have done. Calling Senators’ offices is in order, but we Tillis has told us in advance he will vote the wrong way.
